March 2, 2007, Newsletter Issue #50: Aromatherapy in the Steam Room

Tip of the Week

Aromatherapy is the practice of using essential oils to relax and rejuvenate your body, and a steam room is a great place to use it.

In a sauna, to practice aromatherapy the only thing you need to do is put a few drops of essential oil in with the water you pour over the rocks. Unfortunately, it's not quite that easy in a steam room, because you don't physically create the steam yourself – a steam generator does.

To use aromatherapy in a steam room, the best thing to do is to buy a special steam head that has a small divot to put a few drops of oil in. When the steam passes through the head, it evaporates the oil and allows it to diffuse through the room, where you can soak up the benefits of the oil or oils you've chosen.

You can use regular essential oils in a special aroma steam head, but you may want to check with the manufacturer of the steam head to see if they recommend any special kinds.

Aroma steam heads and oils are usually available wherever steam room and sauna accessories are sold, either in stores, in catalogs, or online.
