June 16, 2006, Newsletter Issue #20: Heat and the Immune System

Tip of the Week

Besides the direct effects heat has on viruses, heat also helps to mobilize the immune system. Sometimes metabolic activity of the body can increase 10% for every degree you raise your temperature.

When you apply heat (or hyperthermia), you dilate the blood vessels which in turn, helps create more white blood cells, natural-killer cells, cytokines and all the inflammatory cells that may actually help fight the virus because you´ve enhanced blood flow.
